A poplar flower is surrounded with a cup-shaped disk--a character
that makes a poplar catkin different from that of a willow
or chosenia. These disks can still be seen at fruit. (There was no
proof that the catkin picked up from the ground belonged to big-tooth aspen,
except that big-tooth aspen was growing in the area.)
