This Chinese aralia has much in common with the American A. spinosa (devil's walking stick). It has been recently recognized growing in Massachusetts and elsewhere in New England instead of A. spinosa . This is a small tree or shrub with decompound leaves of impressive size: the little plant in the photo bears only five leaves.
