Garden-in-the-Woods, Framingham
This small tree belongs to the mainly
Eurasiatic genus; ironwood is the only North American species. Their
picturesque "corrugated" trunks are readily recognizable in rich
woods and swamps. Hornbeams mostly would not grow larger than tall shrubs. Those
with blue-gray bark were segregated by Fernald in var. virginiana .
