A twig of American hazelnut covered with glandular bristles. Pistillate flowering buds are terminating a leafy shoot, whose leaves aren't yet expanded. Each of the two buds contains several pistillate flowers. A single flower manifests itself with a pair of slender red stigmas. (Staminate flowers are on the same plant.)
