Only beaked hazelnut is common in the Blue Hills; American is a rarity. We had been sure that it was completely absent until we found it at the Ponkapoag Dam. Soon after that the dam was closed for a major reconstruction. We don't yet know if this locally uncommon plant is going to survive.
