A non-native species of water starwort is now widespread in
eastern Massachusetts, while of the two native species only one
still remains relatively common. The alien starwort is recognizable by its
rounded, broad water-surface leaves. Water starwort is
flowering early in spring: the yellow dots are anthers, each staminate flower
represented by a single stamen.
