This inconspicuous native plant lives an interesting life. The rosette of stout leaves formed during the previous fall has been overwintering green. In May its branches start to elongate, developing into rather tall shoots. The rosette thus disappears for the summer. During the fall, in preparation for the next winter, a new one is going to develop.
