Opening the spikelet. The achene underneath the taken-off scale
has never developed, which gives us a chance to observe the style preserved at
the flowering stage. The style is three-cleft. Some spike-rushes have
three stigmas, while others have only two. The brittle branches of the style
brake off very easily, while its thick base persists on the achene forming the
tubercle.
