A single-stem rosebay growing underneath a large hemlock. Stumps and remnants of stems around raised doubts about the authenticity of the tree-like habit. Rosebay can, however, naturally grow as a "straggling tree up to 10 m high" (Gray's Manual of Botany, Fernald's 8th Edition).
