Chestnut oak belongs to the group of white oaks, which are
fundamentally different from the red-oak group in many ways. One important
difference is the germination time. White oaks germinate immediately upon
dissemination, before the onset of the winter weather. This strategy gives them
an advantage in spring, but at the same time leaves tender youngsters vulnerable
during the winter. Red oaks do not take the risk and germinate only in spring.
