Myles Standish State Forest, Plymouth
These strange figurines found scattered on the forest floor are
the so-called pitch pine knots. They are full of resin and
thus resist decay long after the trunk or stump falls
apart. When ignited, they can be burned for hours. Due to that, pitch pine knots
were used by pioneers for primitive lighting devices. Children
were sent to pitch pine woods to collect
pine knots.
