Sea lavender belongs to a large genus that includes more than
200 species distributed on all the continents, particularly in arid and
saline habitats. The entire family Plumbaginaceae is known to
contain many halophytic plants, i.e., those that can tolerate high
salinity--inhabitants of mangroves, arid solonchucks of Central Asia, or Mediterranean dry islands.
