'Little clown'--that's how the name
Mimulus is translated. This name is believed to
allude to the shape of the corolla with its wide, three-parted
lower lip resembling a smile with a teasing tongue, but maybe it also has to
do with the bright colors--the same way as the English name "rock
harlequin" has to do with the colors of Corydalis sempervirens .
