Cattails are monoecious, their spikes always consisting of
two more or less separated units: the superior staminate and the
inferior pistillate part. They are wind-pollinated. To ensure
cross-pollination, the pistillate part on a particular plant gets ready for
pollination earlier than its staminate part. This young inflorescence is at the
pistillate stage.
