"Leaf primordia in the bud considerably exceed ament primordium.
The first two leaf primoria corresponding to cataphylls of
a young shoot are fringed with silky cilia at the very margin, glabrous on
the outer surface. The outermost leaf primordium [here on the left] is very
wide, broadly oval or reniform when spread, with parallel
venation and completely embracing the
rest of the bud content [right], so that its margins reach
each other or even overlap." (Skvortsov 1960).
