Plant cultivated from time immemorial in temperate China and Japan, where it is so widespread that the limits of its natural distribution are obscure; introduced to Europe only in the mid-19th century. It has not been known as truly naturalized in North America, rather encountered as persisting in place of old gardens. However, in Maine and Connecticut it is already listed as "introduced." This plant has escaped.
