Even though this infruitescence is terminal, the verdict for the plant is that it remains a suspected hybrid with Oriental bittersweet. The reason for that is the amount of ripe seed in each fruit. American bittersweet is said to produce only 1 to 3 ripe seed, while the seed count for these capsules yielded a mixed result: from 1 to 6 ripe seed in each (a bittersweet capsule generally is 3-locular, with 1-2 seed in each locule).
