Now that eastern Massachusetts is becoming
more and more forested, such sun-loving conifers as common
juniper are becoming a rarity, so we stopped to take a closer look. Even
though the juniper resembled J. communis , there was clearly something different
in these abundant,
large cones, which were larger than those in common juniper. Besides,
the extremely low, creeping habit made it look more
like J. horizontalis than J. communis .
