Original plantings, apparently, existed on both sides of the
road. While the conifer has spread over the eastern slope, it largely did not
survive on the darker, densely forested western slope. Instead it descended from
there into the sparse pitch pine forest and produced a separate large
subpopulation in the lowland. The juniper population is also present on
the other side of the bridge (across the highway), though it is much less
extensive there.
