The evergreen leaves are very thick,
leathery, more or less rusty-tomentose beneath, up to 25 cm long. Great laurel,
in a way, is the only "true rhododendron" in our area: it
belongs to the subgenus Eurhododendron , whereas rhodora, swamp azalea, pink azalea, and
early azalea all belong to Anthodendron .
