The native eastern North American lupine has become difficult
to find and been placed on the Watch List in Massachusetts.
The native lupine is a compact plant
in comparison with the introduced western North
American species (called garden lupine). The latter
can grow to 1.2 m and has more leaflets (11-18) in a single
leaf. The eastern species grows only up to 0.7 m and has only 5-11
leaflets.
