A Cynipidae wasp Callirhytis operator forms this woolly catkin gall, one of the two forms (the spring asexual generation) of acorn pip gall. The spring generation larvae form galls on oak staminate catkins (while the fall form, the sexual generation, attacks acorns in summer/fall).
