Trout lily is a North American ephemeroid plant. Ephemeroids are perennial plants, which makes them different from ephemers, annuals that also take advantage of a short favorable period in spring. While ephemers are widespread in deserts, ephemeroids typically are plants of deciduous temperate forest.
