Picea mariana (P. Miller) B.S.P.30 of 32
July 1, Philbrick-Cricenti Quaking Bog, New London, NH
black spruce
Black spruce is the only spruce capable of layering (rooting
of branches) and forming adventitious roots. That explains
why it can grow as a spreading shrub and even become
completely prostrate and trailing as an alpine plant.
