Pine bark adelgid (Pineus strobi) immature larvae overwinter on white-pine bark. Early in
spring they start consuming the phloem reaching to it from
the bark surface. White wax that they secrete becomes wooly on their bodies at
maturity, before the egg-laying. They can be so abundant that the entire trunk
looks "frosted".
