A trunk of a fallen pine. The leftovers of the bark are still visible on the limb. Watch the gap between the bark and the trunk. This empty space tells us how much of the trunk has decayed. A large layer that used to be sapwood and bark is now gone. It is the firm heartwood that remains resistant to decay.
