Cattails are monoecious, their spikes always consisting of two more or less separated units: the superior staminate and the inferior pistillate part. They are wind-pollinated. To ensure cross-pollination, the pistillate part on a particular plant gets ready for pollination earlier than its staminate part. This young inflorescence is at the pistillate stage.
