Already by the time when Alfred Rehder produced his famous Manual of Cultivated Trees and Shrubs, tree-of-heaven was fully "naturalized in the eastern US." Rehder still admired
it "for the handsome foliage and also, particularly var. erythrocarpa, for the conspicuous fruit in the fall." Could he foresee that abundant saplings would take root all across the Arboretum
and beyond?
